Taking it to another level…

Late summer Adventure Overland Show, September 2019 – that’s when it all started.

What was supposed to be a simple family weekend away, camping and looking at off-roaders and expedition vehicles, turned out to be a beginning of a new chapter for us, but especially for our Navara. On the first day of that event, nothing special happened. Navara parked, tent set up and off we went and looked for ideas on how to kit up our truck for future adventures. Boxes, drawers, slides, canopies, fridges, racks. Numerous conversations with exhibitors and people like us. Head full of ideas, rucksack full of merchandise and leaflets. Walk to a nearest town for something to eat, few beers in the awning and off to bed.

Aga’s view: Dokładnie tak jak Jakub napisał – ten weekend powinien być naszym kolejnym wypadem – takim rodzinnym… tym razem kolejny wypad “gdzieś tam” – ok – jasne… czemu nie. Żaden z nas nie spodziewał się co nastąpi po tym wspólnie spędzonym czasie. Jak zazwyczaj – kolejny show – no to zaparakowaliśmy Navarę i zabraliśmy sie za rozkładanie namiotu. Podczas całego show mieliśmy okazję zobaczyć jak to się podróżuje pełną parą… Nie macie pojęcia jak bardzo nakręciliśmy się – ludzie których poznaliśmy – rozmowa trwała jak byśmy znali się od dziecka. Zapraszali nas do swoich “przeróbek”, w których mieli wszystko… Robiłam wielkie oczy. Spoglądałam na Kubę i kolejny raz rozumieliśmy się bez słów. Trzeba coś zmienić… 😉

And then the rain came. All-night rain that changed everything. Woke up in the morning to see everything in our SHOWERPROOF ONLY awning completely soaked with water puddles all over the awning floor. Yeah, we had dry change of clothes in the truck. But it was a chilly morning, grass was wet and we felt like we couldn’t be arsed crawling out of a warm sleeping bag to get to it. I mean, I could, but all this completely broke my sun-loving wife. She did not enjoy it at all. Luckily, sun started to appear in the sky and we quickly changed and went for breakfast and a morning coffee. And talked. At the end of our conversation we agreed we need to do something. We needed a change. We went on to look at the vehicles again, but with a completely different mindset – stay cosy, stay dry, stay warm, stay inside the vehicle. For my wife the solution was obvious – a camper van.

Aga’s view: No i tutaj nastąpił przełom – kobieta rządzi jak zawsze… wstałam rano – całą noc padało a to spowodowało, że wszystko miałam przemoczone – łącznie z moimi butami i jedynymi spodniami, które mogłam założyć. Słowa Kuby były zajebiste: “Kochanie załóż je mokre – szybko wyschną na Twoim ciele – wyparują….” ehhh WTF – to nie to co chciałam usłyszeć. Kobieta żyje w tym lepszym świecie 😉 a nie w tym ekstremalnym. Już dawno temu nie byłam tak zła jak wtedy… Ale Kuba jest ekspertem w uspakajniu mnie ( za co go mocno kocham) więc szukałam pozytywu – tylko jakiego? – Założyłam te mokre buty i te mokre spodnie – nawet miał racje – bo na moim “wkur….ym” ciele szybko wyschły… 😉

Poszliśmy zapodać sobie “healthy food” na śniadanie. No i w drogę odkrywać nowe pomysły. Byłam tak zauroczona pomysłami ludzi, że nie było odwrotu. No i zaczęły się przeróbki… Kuba jak zawsze potrzebuje poukładać sobie wszystko w głowie – to jak burza mózgów… Te zdjęcia poniżej to były opcje… ale szczerze:? nie na naszą kieszeń to raz a dwa nie moglibyśmy tym wjechać w porządne błoto…. Może i fajnie wyglądają ale to nie tak do końca było dla nas. Trochę długo zajęło zanim znaleźlismy coś dla nas…

For me, not so much. Yeah, fully kitted out Sprinters, Crafters or even Transporters, are nice. One living space, diesel heater, hob, sink, electrics… what’s not to like? Hmm,let me think… Size? Ground clearance? Approach, breakover and departure angles? Of course, it can all be improved and modified, but at what cost? We’re not exactly the richest couple on the planet and while we don’t mind spending money on something decent, we hate losing and wasting money. Money are better spent on travelling. Since we’ve already done some modifications to our truck and it’s been reliable, we decided to keep it. Decision had to be made about how to convert it into our little “house on wheels”. Started searching for 4×4 campers, pick up campers, demountable campers. Some were horribly expensive, some not available in the UK and some made you think – do I really want to have a living room on wheels?

Gathering ideas…

We narrowed it down to two options from the same manufacturer: Alu Cab Khaya and Alu Cab Canopy Camper.

No i się zawęziło do tych dwóch afrykańskich opcji…. Nie wyobrażałam sobie nie wjechać w teren i nie mieć trochę komfortu… Nie chcielismy też kupować czegoś, co będzie gabarytowo większe, niż cały samochód…. i zdecydowaliśmy się na opcję po prawej. Ta z lewej jest bardziej komfortowa i większa ale za tym idzie wieksza cena. Zdecydowaliśmy się na wersję po prawej… Nikt nie spodziewał się Covid-19, który niestety opóźnił wszystko… Ostatecznie po 6 miesiącach pojawiła się z Południowej Afryki – ta wyczekana skorupa – ALU CAB. Poniżej zdjęcia przeróbek… a końca nie widać 😉

The former is bigger and more comfortable but more expensive and bulkier/heavier. The latter turned out to be exactly what we want – smaller & lighter but big enough for our family and also possible to “do it up” to suit our needs. Just before Christmas decision has been made and we were hoping to have the canopy shipped from South Africa and fitted just in time for the camping season. Unfortunately, 2020 turned out to be the year of Covid-19 and everything has been disrupted by lockdowns and quarantines. Our Canopy camper finally arrived at the end of June, 6 months after the first email was sent to the UK distributor. At the time of writing (end of July) we’re rushing to get everything ready for our August holiday. Here’s a few pictures from the progress of our work:

…but it was ready enough to spend the first night in. The view was good and as you can see, there’s enough leg room for those hot nights 😉

Final test on day two – very happy with the result. But that’s just the beggining…

Finally back at home…

We were holding back some modifications, until the Canopy Camper is fitted. Now we can finally start – here getting it ready for new running boards…

…and new rear wheels. Went for 17” at the back for more sidewall flex. And now we carry two spare wheels: one on the back door and one under the truck

With the outside looking much better now, it was time to work on the inside – starting to work on th floor and tidy up the split charge system.

And after few busy weeks we could finally go out and test new set up.

Miejsce, do którego mieliśmy okazję pojechać to The Old Coach Road. Wyśmienite miejsce dla milośników 4×4, kórzy mają fantastyczne widoki, prawie 5 mil wertepów i miejsce na relaks. To miejsce, dla każdego kto ma ochotę zaszyć się z dala od ludzi i zdoła wjechać swoim samochodem, quad’em czy motorem.

Everything seemed to be working as we expected it to work. Whole design idea was born in my head and is a result of many sleepless nights – hard work paid off and I’m very happy with it. Only a couple of little tweaks were required after this first weekend away. Plus a new tyre after badly puncturing another one… Big test on our holiday in two weeks, see what that brings.

To na tyle Kochani, to taka namiastka tego co samochód w sobie posiada. Ciągle coś dodajemy, zmieniamy… ale najważniejsze to fakt, że daje nam to mnóstwo frajdy, przygód i wspomnień. Możemy nim wjechać w wymagający teren, a jednocześnie być niezależni od wszystkiego. Woda, ogrzewanie postojowe, panele solarowe, toaleta, prysznic, schowki, elektryka. Zabudowa ALU CAB, która może zostać przeniesiona na każdy inny samochód terenowy w przyszłości, chroni nas przed deszczem, wiatrem, kiedy my jednocześnie możemy się relaksować schowani w środku siedząc przy kawie i książce albo sączyć zimne piwko opisując kolejną wyprawę…
